Agency to Launch Career Connections Pilot Project

Independence, Inc. a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to empowering people with disabilities in northwestern North Dakota is proud to announce the launch of Career Connections, a pilot project for transition-age youth enrolled in special education units throughout the region.

The experiential learning program is an extension of the agency’s school-based youth transition services. Career Connections is designed to introduce students with disabilities to different industries and prepare youth for life following high school graduation. Throughout the program, students will examine their interests, identify career paths, develop soft skills, learn about post-secondary education options, establish relationships with local employers, and gain hands-on experience.

The program will consist of various experiential learning activities during the 2020-2021 school year. The first experience is intended for students aspiring to pursue careers in culinary arts or the restaurant industry. Independence, Inc. will partner with Prairie Sky Breads (PSB) to offer a virtual activity on Monday, September 14, 2020, from 4:30-6:30 P.M. through the video-conferencing platform, Zoom. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the bakery, explore positions, gain a better understanding of job duties, and put their culinary skills to the test by preparing a PSB pizza at home.

Each student will be required to complete a pre-activity worksheet and submit 3 questions to the Youth Transition Specialist, Sierra Smith by 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 10, 2020. Once class preparation materials are submitted, participants will receive an email notification with their designated pizza kit pick-up time and Zoom link.

Thanks to Independence, Inc. funders, the experience is free and available for high school students with disabilities located within the Independence, Inc. service region. Early registration is encouraged as supplies and class spots are limited. The registration deadline is Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
