Independent Living Advocate-Transition and Diversion Services
Join Our Mission – Removing Barriers, Achieving Dreams, One Transition at a Time
At Independence, Inc., we believe that everyone deserves to live where they choose, with the supports they need, and the dignity they deserve. As an Independent Living Advocate, you’ll be part of a passionate, peer-led team committed to helping people with disabilities break barriers, reclaim independence, and thrive in the community—not institutions.
If you’re looking for more than just a job and want a career where you’ll make a real difference this might be your calling.
What You’ll Do
You’ll work one-on-one with individuals with disabilities who are institutionalized or who are at risk of institutionalization. Your job? Help them move into homes that truly support their independence and goals.
That might mean:
• Assisting someone in moving out of a nursing home and into their own home
• Helping someone stay in their own home by arranging support services, coordinating home modifications, or connecting them with resources
• Navigating the support system to remove urgent safety risks
This role is part social worker, part advocate, part detective—and 100% changemaker.
Daily Adventures Could Include:
• Creating transition plans that reflect what the person actually wants (imagine that!).
• Coordinating services with social workers, medical providers, and community partners.
• Helping someone learn how to budget, access benefits, or furnish a new apartment.
• Cheering people on through moments of growth, confidence, and success.
What We’re Looking For
• Someone who believes in people over programs and rights over red tape.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and people skills.
• Experience working with (or being part of) the disability community.
• A self-starter who’s great at managing time and working independently.
• Bonus points if you know about housing systems, Medicaid waivers, or independent living philosophy—but we’ll train the right person.
What We Offer
• A supportive work environment where your voice matters.
• Opportunities to grow, lead, and be part of something meaningful.
• A chance to change lives—and be changed in the process.
• Competitive pay, benefits, and a workplace that values fun, impact, and inclusion.

What’s a letter of application?
It’s a lot like a cover letter, but a little more personal. Share your experience, your passion for the work, and how your skills or lived experience connect to our mission.
This is your chance to show us who you are, why you belong on our team, and to demonstrate your ability to communicate in writing, a key part of this job!

Youth Transition Specialist
Empowering the Next Generation, One Skill at a Time
At Independence, Inc., we believe young people with disabilities should be equipped not just to survive adulthood, but to own it. As our Youth Transition Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in making that happen. You'll help youth ages 14 to 21 gain the confidence, skills, and direction they need to transition from school life to real life.
This is the job for someone who loves working with students, believes in their potential, and knows how to mix structure with creativity. You’ll teach, mentor, and advocate your way through classrooms, communities, and conversations that change lives.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Deliver a 15-week transition curriculum in local schools (think real-life lessons, goal-setting, interactive activities, and no boring lectures).
• Help students create Independent Living Plans that reflect their goals, not someone else's idea of a checklist.
• Provide one-on-one and group-based training in life skills, workforce readiness, and leadership development.
• Be the connector, linking students and families to the community resources and supports they need to succeed.
• Build real partnerships with school staff, families, agencies, and anyone else in a student’s corner.
• Celebrate wins, problem-solve barriers, and advocate like it matters, because it does.
Who You Are
• You believe in youth potential, not just in theory, but in practice.
• You’re a strong communicator who can engage everyone from high schoolers to school principals to parents.
• You’re independent, organized, and can juggle school visits, reports, and a spontaneous pep talk all in one day.
• You might have a bachelor’s degree in something like human services, education, social work, or a related field, but if not, a mix of lived experience, relevant work history, and passion can go a long way.
• You’re tech-savvy enough to handle digital records, emails, and the occasional newsletter update.
• You’re mobile, reliable, and comfortable traveling throughout northwest North Dakota to make things happen.
