People with disabilities have the right to be treated with dignity and respect; the right to live and receive services in their own homes, and to decide for themselves what is best for them. Independent living is different from other social services in that people with disabilities decide what services are needed and the best way to receive those services. This allows individuals more control over their own lives and leads to independence. Since 1995, Independence has worked to make Minot and the surrounding counties a better place to live, work and play for people with disabilities. Independence aims to provide the provision of its services, free of charge, toward unserved and underserved populations within Northwest North Dakota. Independence has the training and personal experience helpful in knowing what is needed to live independently. We also have a deep commitment to assist consumers in becoming more independent and reach for their dreams. The primary goal of Independence is to assist individuals with disabilities in maintaining their independence in the least restrictive environment. Independence is “consumer driven” meaning that we believe the individual knows better then anyone else and should be the responsible party in directing their own life and their own future. Our MissionTo advocate for the freedom of choice for individuals with disabilities to live independently through the removal of all barriers.
